Objectives
The planet Mercury has been left unexplored for 35 years after the flyby
observations by Mariner-10. On March 18, 2011, NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft
made a successful entry into an orbit around the planet. The first orbiter
around the elusive planet started to provide with us the first close-up
and continuous look at Mercury. In September, half a year after the exciting
event of Mercury Orbit Insertion, we will get together in Kyoto and learn
the very initial results from MESSENGER. This meeting will be the first
public opportunity where the super-fresh MESSENGER results are presented
by the team members. The team of BepiColombo, which is an ESA/JAXA project
to Mercury, hosts the meeting together with the MESSENGER team. This meeting
should serve as a good opportuinity for planetary scientists to trigger
their interest in Mercury, boost their science activity in Mercury, and
to get exposed to the excitement of a new planetary mission.
